The WAR Comes To Nebraska

The men and women of Nebraska made significant contributions in the all-out effort to win World War II. The conflict, which touched nearly all Nebraskans, moved residents toward a common purpose unlike any other time in our history. Nearly 140,000 Nebraskans joined America's Armed Forces, while those who remained on the home front played an equally important role.

Across the state, 11 military airfields trained hundreds of thousands of air crews, and three major ordinance plants produced ammunition and bombs. At its peak, the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hastings provided 40 percent of the Navy's ammunition. The Martin Bomber Plant built B-26 and B-29 bombers, including the aircraft that dropped the atomic bombs.

The nation's busiest canteen, which served between six and eight million service men and women, was located at the North Platte train station. The Omaha World-Herald received a Pulitzer Prize for its work with the national scrap metal drive.
